Hacker Arrests Escalate
Every bit hacking groups like Anonymous and LulzSec have earned a higher profile in the past few months, they've also attained themselves (or perhaps their patsies) an increasing number of trips to jail.
Just about recently, law in the U.K. have charged the 18-year-common wormwood they allege is LulzSec spokesperson "Topiary" with five offenses related to DDOS attacks on the Severe Organised Law-breaking Agency (SOCA), which is similar to the FBI in the United States.
While some reports hint police nabbed the wrong poke fu, Topiary would be a big arrest for government, and the latest in a growing name of hacker arrests. Here's law enforcement's hacker hit list for the first half of 2011:
- Jan 27: UK police arrest basketball team alleged hackers believed to have taken set forth in DDOS attacks against PayPal, Visa, and Mastercard after the companies quit processing payments for WikiLeaks. In July, the companies began processing payments for Julian Assange's chemical group once again.
- February 14: Spanish police arrested a cyberpunk who allegedly tried to blackmail Nintendo after acquiring hold of a database with user information. Afterward being spurned by Nintendo, the hacker published 4000 user records on an online assembly.
- June 10: Spanish constabulary nab three hackers believed to be role of Unknown and involved in a number of hacking campaigns, from the PayPal aggress to winning down sites of various world government agencies, including some in Spain.
- June 13: A bigger calendar week for hacker arrests continues in Europe with the arrest of 32 alleged Anonymous members in 12 cities across the countries. Hackers had attacked Turkish government websites in protest of "plans to implement a filter on Net browsing."
- June 21: British authorities take apart a 19-year-longtime into detention in connectedness with the attack happening the SOCA site. Later identified as Ryan Cleary, he's believed to take over hosted an IRC waiter for LulzSec.
- July 19: In the first big American sting on hackers this year, the FBI arrests 14 suspects across a number of states they believe to have taken part in the PayPal attacks worst yr. The suspects ranged in age from 22 to 42, with one individual's age withheld.
- July 27: U.K. police arrest the man believed to follow Topiary in the Shetland Islands. While some suspect the real Topiary is in reality Swedish, another Lulz/Anon spokesperson, Sabu, has started a "#FreeTopiary" campaign.
